Radiation shielding glass contains lead oxide (PbO) in its composition during manufacturing. This addition significantly enhances the glass’s ability to absorb harmful ionizing radiation, such as X-rays and gamma rays. These specialized glass panels are exclusively designed for indoor use in controlled environments with regulated humidity and temperature.
They find application in spaces where ionizing radiation is either scattered or directly emitted. The effectiveness of these panels is measured by their “equivalent lead thickness,” which parallels their performance with a theoretical sheet of pure lead of a specific thickness.
For instance, a thickness of leaded glass ranging from 3.5 mm to 22 mm corresponds to an equivalent lead thickness of 1.2 mm to 6.1 mm. Typically, these glass panels are custom-made upon special order.
